Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum were the founders of the pickleball game. It was first time invented in 1965 in Bainbridge Island, Washington, USA.

They all were on family vacations on that days. One day after playing a game of golf, Pritchard and Bell returned home and found their children bored. So, they decided to entertain their kids.

They planned to play badminton but needed more proper equipment to do that. Then these two dads came up with a new idea to overcome the boredom of their kids.

Thus they start playing using random equipment, ping pong paddles, and a plastic ball. In this way, they improvised a new sport.

The following weekend, Pritchard and Bell tell McCallum about this new sports game.

The primary purpose of this game was to entertain the whole family by playing together. With time, these three dads created new rules to make it more interesting by getting ideas from badminton, and initially, they used a badminton court to play this game.

During that time, McCallum made some paddles by hand from plywood.

As time progressed, Players noticed that the ball bounced well on the asphalt surface, and its playability improved. Thus they dropped the net from 60 to 32 inches to make it more interesting. But it does not end there.

In 1967, the first permanent official pickleball court was constructed in the backyard of Bob O’Brien, the close friend and neighbour of Joel Pritchard. That’s the beginning of this sport.

Similarly, in 1972, they formed a corporation to protect the progress of this new sport.

In 1975, the first article was published on Pickleball by the National observer.

As time proceeded, Pickleball became more popular. In 1976, South Center Athletic Club hosted the first pickleball tournament in Tukwila, Washington. In that tournament, many of the participants were college tennis players.

Similarly, in 1984, United States Amateur Pickleball Association (USAPA) was formed to perpetuate the growth and advancement of Pickleball.
